Pierre, S.D. (Aug. 21, 2023) – The South Dakota Freedom Caucus has released an open public letter voicing concerns over the American Library Association’s (ALA) recent actions and emphasizing the importance of preserving the integrity of local libraries.
“Our public libraries,” stated Chairman Representative Aaron Aylward, “should be places of learning, research, and fellowship, not platforms for imposing ideologies. We are deeply troubled by the ALA’s radical political ideology.”
The letter underscores the ALA’s shift from its core mission, notably its promotion of gender ideology to children and the codification of leftist social control mechanisms such as diversity, equity, inclusion (DEI), and Critical Race Theory (CRT).
“We believe in freedom, respect, and integrity,” added Vice Chair Representative Tony Randolph. “Our libraries should be safe spaces for all, free from extremist ideologies. We cannot allow external influences to erode our state’s identity.”
The Caucus calls on the South Dakota Library Association to sever ties with the ALA and urges state legislatures to ensure no taxpayer dollars support the ALA.
“Our libraries are local treasures,” emphasized Treasurer Representative Tina Mulally. “We won’t let them be overrun by a radical organization acting outside its core mission.”
Endorsed by several organizations, the letter also highlights concerns over religious discrimination, the promotion of critical race theory, inappropriate content distribution, and collaboration with organizations deemed inappropriate.
South Dakotans are encouraged to stand with the Freedom Caucus, ensuring libraries remain cherished community institutions.
