SD Freedom Caucus Calls for Free-Market Approach to Emerging Technologies

As President Trump Prioritizes American Innovation, Freedom Caucus Urges South Dakota to Embrace Entrepreneurship Without Government Intervention

PIERRE, S.D. — As President Donald Trump continues to advance American technological leadership through executive action, the South Dakota Freedom Caucus is calling on state leaders to create an environment where innovation and entrepreneurship can thrive — without taxpayer subsidies or government mandates.

“South Dakota has an opportunity to lead, not by picking winners and losers, but by getting government out of the way and letting the free market work,” said Senator John Carley, Vice Chair of the South Dakota Freedom Caucus, who has run a digital marketing company for over 25 years. “As a business owner and someone who works in the tech sector every day, I understand what entrepreneurs need: stable infrastructure, predictable regulatory environments, and the freedom to build without bureaucratic interference.”

The Freedom Caucus, whose membership includes numerous business owners and entrepreneurs, has been actively examining issues like energy grid stability and infrastructure reliability — foundational concerns for any business looking to grow in the state.

“We reject the false choice being presented to South Dakotans,” said Representative Tina Mulally, Treasurer of the South Dakota Freedom Caucus. “You don’t have to fear the future, and you don’t have to demand that taxpayers subsidize it. The American spirit of innovation has never depended on government handouts — it has depended on freedom, hard work, and the opportunity to pursue the American dream.”

While other states rush to offer massive taxpayer incentives to attract emerging industries, the Freedom Caucus believes South Dakota’s competitive advantage lies in its commitment to limited government and free enterprise.

“We’re pro-growth and pro-business — but not at the expense of the taxpayers we represent,” Carley said. “The free market allows entrepreneurs to pursue new opportunities. What we oppose is forcing South Dakota families to subsidize ventures that should succeed or fail on their own merits.”

The South Dakota Freedom Caucus will continue to advocate for policies that remove barriers to entrepreneurship, strengthen critical infrastructure, and ensure South Dakota remains a place where innovators can build the future without government picking the path.
